Harry E. Richter

Harry E. Richter (born April 23, 1847 in Vermillion , Ohio , †  December 15, 1911 in Emporia , Kansas ) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1903 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Kansas.

Career

Harry Richter attended the public schools in Hamilton and Rushville ( Indiana ), where his parents had moved in the meantime. Despite his youth, he took part in the final phase of the civil war as a soldier in the Union Army from 1864 . He was involved in some battles and was also wounded. After the war, Richter studied pharmacy and then became a pharmacist. He and one of his brothers came to Council Grove , Kansas, in 1871 . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . This started in Council Grove parish council. There he was also a member of the education committee several times. In the meantime he was also Sheriff in Morris County . That was at a time when the area was still dominated by Indians and cowboys and there were often violent clashes. Richter successfully asserted himself against this violence. He was later also mayor of Council Grove three times. Then he became a member and chairman of the board of directors of the state prison administration. He was a member of the Kansas Senate for four years and the Kansas House of Representatives for two years .

In 1898 Richter was elected lieutenant governor alongside William E. Stanley . He held this office after re-election in 1900 between January 9, 1899 and January 12, 1903. He was Deputy Governor . In 1902 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for gubernatorial elections. Among other things, he was a member of the veterans' organization Grand Army of the Republic . He has been very successful in business with a number of companies. He died in Emporia on December 15, 1911.
