James McGrew

James McGrew (born January 26, 1822 in Adams County , Pennsylvania , †  January 19, 1911 in Kansas City , Kansas ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1867 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Kansas.

Career

James McGrew attended public schools in his home country. At the age of 22, he moved to the Iowa Territory with his parents , where he worked in commerce. In the local city of Lancaster he ran a department store. In 1857 he came to Wyandotte County in the Kansas Territory , where he also worked in commerce. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . In 1859 and 1860 he was a member of the Kansas Territory Legislature. He was also mayor of Wyandotte, now part of Kansas City, for two terms. In 1862 he was elected to the Kansas Senate.

In 1864, McGrew was elected Lieutenant Governor of Kansas, alongside Samuel J. Crawford . He held this office between January 9, 1865 and January 14, 1867. He was Deputy Governor . After the end of his time he continued to work in the trade. He died in Kansas City on January 19, 1911.
