Thomas R. Docking

Thomas R. Docking (born August 10, 1954 in Lawrence , Kansas , † August 24, 2017 in Topeka , Kansas) was an American politician . Between 1983 and 1987 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Kansas.

Career

Thomas Docking came from a well-known political family in Kansas. Both his grandfather George Docking (1904–1964) and his father Robert Docking (1925–1983) were governors of this state of Kansas. After elementary school, he graduated from Topeka West High School in 1972 . He then studied at the University of Kansas until 1976 . After studying law at the same university and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In 1982, Docking was elected Lieutenant Governor of Kansas alongside John W. Carlin . He held this office between January 10, 1983 and January 12, 1987. He was Deputy Governor. In 1986 he ran for governor himself, but was defeated by Republican Mike Hayden .

After the end of his time as lieutenant governor, he practiced again as a lawyer. On October 22, 2013, Kansas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis announced that he had selected Thomas Docking's wife Jill as his candidate for lieutenant governor. Together, the two ultimately ran unsuccessfully against incumbent Sam Brownback in 2014 . In 1996, Jill Docking was a Democratic candidate for the United States Senate , but was defeated by Sam Brownback.
