John W. Carlin

John William Carlin (born March 5, 1940 in Salina , Saline County , Kansas ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was the 40th governor of the state of Kansas from 1979 to 1987  .

Early years and political advancement

John Carlin attended Kansas State University until 1962 , where he studied agriculture. Then he became involved in this area. He ran a large farm and specialized in milk production. Carlin's political career began in 1970 when he was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives. After several successful re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate between 1971 and 1979. In 1977 he became President of the House ( Speaker ). This made him the first democratic politician in 64 years to hold this office.

Kansas Governor

In 1978, Carlin was elected as his party's nominee against Republican incumbent Robert Frederick Bennett as the new governor of Kansas. After a successful re-election in 1982, he was able to serve a total of eight years. Carlin was the youngest Kansas governor in the entire 20th century. During his tenure he had to deal with a strong opposition. He was chairman of the National Governors Association from 1984 to 1985 . Due to the requirements of the constitution, Carlin was not allowed to run for governor again in 1986. Therefore, he resigned on January 12, 1987 from his office.

After the temporary freeze of executions, there were several attempts in Kansas from 1976 to reintroduce the death penalty. Corresponding bills failed in 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1985 due to the veto of the democratic governor.

Another résumé

In the run-up to the gubernatorial elections of 1990, he lost within his own party to Joan Finney . In 1994 Carlin ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . Between 1995 and 2005 he was the United States archivist . As a Democrat, he was appointed to this office by President Bill Clinton and not confirmed by his successor George W. Bush after his temporary contract expired. Today Carlin teaches political science at Kansas State University.
