David "Dave" Heineman (born May 12, 1948 in Falls City , Nebraska ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ) and from 2005 to 2015 governor of the state of Nebraska. From 2011 to 2012, he succeeded Christine Gregoire as chairman of the National Governors Association .

Early years and political advancement

Heineman attended the US Military Academy in West Point after primary school , which he successfully completed in 1970. He then served five years as an officer in the US Army , where he made it to the position of captain .

As a member of the Republican Party, he served on the staff of Congressman Hal Daub . Between 1990 and 1994 he was a member of the Fremont City Council ; from 1994 to 2001 he was Treasurer of Nebraska. In 2001, he was Deputy Governor of the State under Governor Mike Johanns .

Governor of Nebraska

After Johanns' appointment as Minister of Agriculture in the cabinet of US President George W. Bush , Dave Heineman took over the governorship in January 2005. On November 7, 2006, he was confirmed by the voters of Nebraska for the first time, where he won with 73.4 percent of the vote against the Democrat David Hahn. He had previously prevailed against Congressman Tom Osborne in the Republican Primary . His four main campaign themes were: education, economic development, efficient government and protecting families. In November 2010 he was re-elected for the second time: this time he prevailed against Mike Meister with a share of 74.3 percent of the vote. His lieutenant governor was Rick Sheehy from 2005 until his resignation in 2013 . In November 2014, Republican Pete Ricketts was elected Heineman's successor .

Dave Heineman is married to Sally Ganem. They have a son together.
