Charles Thone (born January 4, 1924 in Hartington , Cedar County , Nebraska , † March 7, 2018 in Lincoln , Nebraska) was an American politician . He was the 35th governor of the state of Nebraska between 1979 and 1983 .

Early years

Charles Thone joined the US Army after elementary school and served there during World War II. After the war, he studied law at the University of Nebraska . After graduation and admission to the bar, he opened a law firm in Lincoln . Between 1951 and 1952, Thone was Assistant Secretary of State for Nebraska, and between 1952 and 1954 he was Assistant District Attorney in Lincoln. Then he was secretary to the US Senator Roman Hruska . In 1970 he was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he remained until 1979. There he was a member of the committee of inquiry into political assassinations, in which, among other things, the assassinations of the two Kennedy brothers were investigated. Thone was active within the Republican Party and was a delegate at their federal party conventions in 1952, 1956 and 1972. In 1978 he was elected the new governor of Nebraska.

Thone's four-year tenure began on January 4, 1979. During this time, he was a member of several governors' associations and the interstate Petroleum Commission. He was also a member of several other business and agricultural associations. His four-year term in office was uneventful. In 1982 he ran unsuccessfully for re-election.

After the end of his tenure, Thone returned to practice as a lawyer. He was a member of the Rotarian Club and was President of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of several lawyers' associations. He lived in Lincoln until his death.

Charles Thone was married to Ruth Raymond, with whom he had three children.
