William A. McKeighan

William Arthur McKeighan (born January 19, 1842 in Millville , New Jersey , †  December 15, 1895 in Hastings , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the second and from 1893 to 1895 the fifth constituency of the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1848, William McKeighan moved with his parents to Fulton County , Illinois , where he attended public schools. During the Civil War he served in an Illinois volunteer regiment.

After the war, McKeighan settled on a farm near Pontiac which he worked. In 1880 he moved to Red Cloud , Nebraska, where he also worked in agriculture. At that time he organized the so-called Farmers' Alliance , a political group that was then absorbed into the short-lived Populist Party . Between 1885 and 1887 McKeighan was a probate judge in Webster County .

In 1888, William McKeighan ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives. In 1890 he was elected as a candidate for the populists for a member of Congress . After being re-elected in 1892, he was able to complete a legislative period between March 4, 1891 and March 3, 1893. Since he was also elected to the House of Representatives in the newly created fifth district in 1892, he could remain in Congress for the following legislative period until March 3, 1895. In the following elections he was defeated by Republican David Henry Mercer .

After his tenure in Congress ended, McKeighan retired from politics. He died just nine months after the end of his last term on December 15, 1895 and was buried in the Red Cloud cemetery.
