John A. Maguire

John Arthur Maguire (born November 29, 1870 in Elizabeth , Jo Daviess County , Illinois , † July 1, 1939 in Lincoln , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1909 and 1915 he represented the first constituency of the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1882, John Maguire and his parents moved to the Dakota Territory , where the family settled near Plankington in what is now South Dakota . John attended Plankington High School until 1889 . Between 1890 and 1893 he studied at the Agricultural College of South Dakota at Brookings and at the Iowa State College of Agriculture . With a law degree at the University of Nebraska , he finished his education in 1899.

John Maguire was a member of the Democratic Party . From 1899 to 1901 he was the deputy chamberlain in Lancaster County . From 1902 he worked as a lawyer in Lincoln. In 1904 Maguire was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in St. Louis . In 1905 he was a member of the executive committee of his party in Nebraska.

In the congressional elections of 1908 he was elected to the US House of Representatives. There he replaced Ernest M. Pollard on March 4, 1909 , whom he had beaten in the election. After he was confirmed in 1910 and 1912, John Maguire was able to complete a total of three terms in Congress by March 3, 1915 . In 1914 he was defeated by the Republican C. Frank Reavis .

After his tenure in Congress ended, Maguire returned to practice as a lawyer. In January 1938 he became a judge at a city court. John Maguire died on July 1, 1939 and was buried in Lincoln.
