Melvin O. McLaughlin

Melvin Orlando McLaughlin (born August 8, 1876 in Osceola , Clarke County , Iowa , † June 18, 1928 in York , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1919 and 1927 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1884, Melvin McLaughlin came to Nebraska with his parents. There he attended public schools and College View High School . He then studied at Lincoln Normal University and Nebraska State Normal School in Peru . Between 1895 and 1900 he worked as a teacher in a school near Lincoln . He then continued his education at Iowa Christian College in Oskaloosa and what is now the University of Nebraska in Omaha . At the end of his studies, he completed the Union Biblical Seminary in Dayton ( Ohio ). Between 1900 and 1913 he was pastor of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ ( United Brethren Church ) in Omaha. After moving to York in 1913, he served as President of York College until 1918 .

Politically, McLaughlin became a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1918 he was elected as their candidate in the US House of Representatives, where he succeeded Charles Henry Sloan on March 4, 1919 . After he was confirmed in this mandate in the following three congressional elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1927 . In 1926 McLaughlin was defeated by the Democrat John N. Norton . He then retired from politics and devoted himself to his private businesses, which also included mining and investment. McLaughlin died in York on June 18, 1928.
