from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Church of the United Brethren in Christ (English Church of the United Brethren in Christ ) is a Christian church with an episcopal church constitution , Arminian theology and roots in the German-speaking Mennonite and Reformed congregations in Pennsylvania in the 18th century.

It was founded around 1800 in the United States by Philipp Wilhelm Otterbein (1726–1813) and Martin Böhm (1725–1812).

In 1889 there was a split between a liberal majority and a conservative minority. In 1946, the majority faction joined forces with the Methodist Evangelical Community to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church , which in turn merged with the Methodist Episcopal Church to form the Methodist Church in 1968 .

The minority faction still exists today as an independent denomination, which has around 550 parishes with 47,300 members in fifteen countries.
