Gilbert L. Laws

Gilbert Lafayette Laws (born March 11, 1838 in Olney , Illinois , † April 25, 1907 in Lincoln , Nebraska ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1891 he represented the second constituency of the state of Nebraska in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

In 1845, Gilbert Laws came to Iowa County , Wisconsin with his parents . There he attended public schools. He then studied at Haskell University and Milton College , also in Wisconsin. In the meantime, Laws worked as a teacher.

During the Civil War , Gilbert Laws served in a Wisconsin volunteer unit in the Union Army. After the war, he settled in Richland County , Wisconsin. There he was employed in the county administration as a county clerk . He also published a newspaper.

Political career

Laws became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1868 and 1869 he was a member of the Richland Center parish council and became mayor in 1869. At the same time (1868-1869) he was Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors District Administrator of this county. He was also a postman in his home district from 1866 to 1876.

In 1876 Laws moved to Orleans , Nebraska. Between 1883 and 1886 he worked for the Federal Property Office ( Land Office ). From 1886 to 1888 he was Secretary of State of Nebraska. After the death of Congressman James Laird , Gilbert Laws was elected as his successor in the US House of Representatives in the by-election. There he ended the legislative period that had begun between December 2, 1889 and March 3, 1891. In the regular congressional elections of 1890 Laws did not stand for re-election.

After his tenure in Congress ended , Gilbert Laws moved to Enid in what is now Oklahoma . There he was in the real estate business until 1895. Then he returned to Nebraska, where he settled in the capital, Lincoln. From 1896 to 1900 he was on his state's transport committee. After that, he retired.
