White squirrel

Olney is known for its white squirrels . In 1902, William Stroup hunted and shot a gray female squirrel. The shot knocked two cubs out of a nest that he was taking home to his children. The animals were later sold to Jasper Banks, who exhibited them in his local pub. In 1910, the Illinois legislature passed a law prohibiting the keeping of squirrels so they were returned to the woods.

In 1925, the city passed a law on the requirement to leash dogs. In 1943 the squirrel population peaked at 1000; today it is unchangeable around 200 individuals. The city council passed a law in 1997 that now makes a leash mandatory for both dogs and cats in order to preserve the special breed of squirrels.

White squirrels have "right of way" on all streets in Olney. Running over one of these animals will result in a $ 200 fine. The Olney Police Department made the white squirrel their logo, and this is how it can be found on all police vehicles. The white squirrel has established itself as Olney's trademark, and the locals still take great pride in it today.
