The county is located in southeast Illinois and has an area of 938 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. The southwest border is formed by the Little Wabash River , whose left tributary, the Fox River , flows through the center of the county. Richland County was formed from Edwards County on February 24, 1841. It was named after the former county of the new settlers, Richland County in Ohio .
