The Little Wabash River is a right tributary of the Wabash River in the US state of Illinois . The river is 382 km long and drains an area of ​​8383 km² in southeast Illinois.

The Little Wabash River rises west of the town of Mattoon in Coles County . It flows mainly in a southerly direction. The two small reservoirs Lake Paradise and Lake Mattoon are located on the upper reaches . The Little Wabash River flows west past the small town of Effingham and later changes direction to the south-southeast. The river passes through the towns of Louisville and Clay City . To the north of Carmi , the Skillet Fork , the most important tributary of the Little Wabash River, flows into the river from the west. This then passes Carmi and finally flows into the Wabash River near the town of New Haven , 25 km above its mouth in the Ohio River .

The Little Wabash River flows through a largely agricultural area. The river, bordered by alluvial forests, shows a strongly meandering behavior along its entire course . In addition to the Skillet Fork, the Little Wabash River has the following notable tributaries: Salt Creek , Big Muddy Creek , Fox River from the left and Elm River from the right.
