The Wabash River is a 765 km long tributary of the Ohio River and the largest tributary of the Ohio on the north side.
It rises near St. Henry, OH in the northwest of the state of Ohio and soon after runs across Indiana . South of Terre Haute , it forms the border between Indiana and Illinois . Its major tributaries are the Tippecanoe River and the White River , both in Indiana. The Little Wabash River and the Embarras River from Illinois are also tributaries of the Wabash River.
The Wabash River is the official "state river" of Indiana and is also mentioned in the state song On the banks of the Wabash, far away by Paul Dresser . The Wabash Railroad is named after the river , which in turn gave its name to the train (and the corresponding song) Wabash Cannonball . Because it has a very long stretch of dam-free stretch (661 kilometers, from Huntington, IN to its mouth), it is also interesting as an angling area for typical North American fish such as catfish , pikeperch and carp . It also has the longest stretch of dam-free river east of the Mississippi River .
The Wabash flows through the active earthquake area Wabash Valley seismic zone .
