Nagaoka ( Japanese 長 岡 市 , - shi ) is a city in the interior of Niigata Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan .

It is located on the banks of the Shinano River , about 250 km from Tokyo .

history

Nagaoka is an old castle town around Nagaoka Castle , where the Makino resided until 1868. On April 1, 1906, the place received city rights.

Just before the end of World War II , 66% of the city was destroyed in an air raid with napalm bombs . The city has also been hit by earthquakes several times, most recently in 2004. Nagaoka has therefore chosen a phoenix as the city symbol , which is supposed to represent the will to resurrect from the ruins. This also represents the largest fireworks display in Japan, which takes place on the Shinano River from the 2nd to the 4th of August each year and the conclusion of which is called the Phoenix.
