history

Murakami is an old castle town , at whose Murakami Castle a branch of the Naitō clan last resided at Murakami Castle.

The independent municipality was created on March 31, 1954 from the amalgamation of the cities ( machi ) Murakami ( 村上 町 ), Iwafune ( 岩 船 町 ), Senami ( 瀬 波 町 ) and villages ( mura ) Saberi ( 山 辺 里 村 ) and Kamikaifu ( 上海 府)村 ) from Iwafune County . On April 1, 2008, Arakawa ( 荒 川 町 ), Sampoku ( 山 北 町 ), Kamihayashi ( 神 林村 ) and Asahi ( 朝日 村 ) were incorporated from the same county.
