Kashiwazaki ( Japanese 柏 崎 市 , -shi ) is a city in the interior of Niigata Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan .

Kashiwazaki is located west of Nagaoka and northeast of Jōetsu on the Sea of Japan .
history
The city of Kashiwazaki was founded on April 1, 1940 .
On July 16, 2007, the 2007 Niigata Chūetsu coastal earthquake struck the city. In Kashiwazaki, it scored the highest on the JMA scale .
