The Echigo Line ( Japanese 越 後 線 , Echigo-sen ) in Niigata Prefecture is a railway line of the JR Higashi-Nihon ( JR East ) between the city of Kashiwazaki and Niigata Station in the Chuō-ku of Niigata . At a distance of a few kilometers, it runs largely parallel to the coast of the Sea of Japan . The railway line of the same name is used today for regional traffic and commuters to Niigata.

Since the stations between Yoshida and Niigata belong to the suburban area of Niigata, the “Suica” season ticket is valid here.

history

The Echigo line was built in several sections between the original terminal stations Kashiwazaki and Hakusan in 1912 and 1913 by the private Echigo Tetsudō ("Echigo Railway"). A planned extension over the Shinano to Niigata station of the state railway ( kokutetsu ) was not completed due to a lack of capital. The name Echigo is derived from the province of the same name , which largely corresponds to today's Niigata Prefecture in its area.

In 1927 the Echigo line was also nationalized. In 1943 the connection to Niigata was finally completed, initially as a secondary line for freight traffic. In 1951, through passenger traffic to Niigata was started.

The electrification of the entire line took place in 1984. Three years later, in 1987, when the state railway was split up for privatization, it fell to JR Higashi-Nihon; at the same time the freight traffic was stopped. In the period since privatization, automatic platform barriers were introduced at the stations around Niigata and the Aoyama (1988) and Uchino-Nishigaoka (2005) stops opened.

Class E127 train in Niigata

The trains of the Echigo railway line are used every 20 minutes for the most part in suburban traffic from Niigata to Uchino, most of the others go to Yoshida. From Kashiwazaki there are only nine trains a day to the east, including only one through to Niigata. There are no express or express trains.

The rolling stock used on the eastern section between Yoshida and Niigata mainly consists of multiple units of the E127 series of the JR Higashi-Nihon. The older trains of the State Railways series 115 are also used on the entire route .
