The class 115 ( Jap. 国鉄115系電車 , kokutetsu 115-kei densha ) is an electric multiple unit , originally created by the State Railway of Japan has been developed and today by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East), the West Japan Railway Company ( JR West) and the Shinano Tetsudō is operated.

history

With the progressive electrification of the Japanese regional railway lines in the 1950s, the need for a high-performance multiple unit that was able to cope with steep gradients in the mountainous regions of the Japanese interior grew. The 111 and 113 series, which had been developed beforehand and which are externally very similar to the 115 series, were not designed for these areas of use with an output of 100 kW, so that only short trains could be formed to overcome the incline. In addition, the 111 and 113 series were not designed for cold, snowy weather in the winter months.

The development of the 115 series was completed in 1963 with the 115-0 version, which was initially used on the Takasaki line . In the 20-year production period of the 115 series, a large number of variants were produced for different purposes. A total of over 2,000 units were produced.

After the privatization of the Japanese National Railways , the trains became the property of the JR East, the JR West and the Shinano Tetsudō. Most trains have now been upgraded and equipped with improved engines. The 115 series trains are painted differently depending on the region in which they are used.
