↓ JR-East: Shin'etsu Main Line

The Shinano Line ( Japanese し な の 鉄 道 線 , Shinano Tetsudō-sen ) is a 65.1 km long railway line in Nagano Prefecture in Japan . The line has been operated since 1997 by the private Shinano Tetsudō ( Japanese し な の 鉄 道 , German "Railway Shinano ").

history

The section between Nagano and Karuizawa , used today by the Shinano Tetsudō, was until 1997 part of the Shin'etsu main line , which is operated by the JR East . With the completion of the Nagano Shinkansen in 1997, long-distance traffic between Nagano and Tokyo was shifted to the new high-speed connection, so that this section of the Shin'etsu main line was no longer lucrative for the JR East.

The operation was taken over by the private Shinano Tetsudō, founded for this purpose, whose majority owner is the prefecture government of Nagano. The Shinano Line is an important regional rail link within Nagano Prefecture. The line is fully electrified and has two tracks. Like many railway lines in rural areas of Japan, the Shinano line suffers from passenger losses despite its important regional function. In order to counteract this development, new stations ( Tekuno-Sakaki , Yashiro-kōkō-mae , Shinano-Kokubunji ) were opened on the route , which should ensure more demand. Furthermore, the route is operated largely without a train attendant, so that the need for personnel is reduced exclusively to the driver.

Vehicle fleet

The Shinano Tetsudō's fleet consists of trains from the former state railways of Japan taken over from JR East , which were painted in the colors of the Shinano Tetsudō after the takeover and most of them were completely redesigned. Many trains have an on-board infotainment system that displays information on the route and advertising.

As a rule, the 169 series trains are used for the express service on the route.
