Karuizawa ( Japanese 軽 井 沢 町 , -machi ) is a community and tourist resort in Kitasaku-gun in the east of Nagano Prefecture in Japan .

The place is about 1000 m above sea level and has been used by Tokioters as a summer resort since the Meiji period. Karuizawa were under the 1964 Summer Olympics , the competitions in eventing discharged. In 1998 the curling competitions of the Olympic Winter Games took place here. Karuizawa is a station on the Nagano Shinkansen .
