Shimominochi-gun
Shimominochi ( Japanese : 下水 内 郡 , literally: "Lower Minochi District") is a district ( gun ) in the north of Nagano Prefecture on the Japanese main island of Honshū . It houses 1758 inhabitants on 271.66 km² and thus has a population density of only 6.5 inhabitants per km² (as of October 1, 2018). As of April 2005, the county has consisted of only one municipality, the village of Sakae (-mura).
After the great Meiji territorial reform in 1889, which introduced today's community forms, Shimominochi County consisted of the small town of Iiyama and 9 village communities. In 1954, during the Great Shōwa regional reform, the first incorporations took place, as a result of which by the end of 1956 the number of communities fell to two. In the period from 1955 to the present day, the area of the district has been more than doubled through incorporation from neighboring districts (in 1955 it was 144 square kilometers).
