Shimominochi-gun

Shimominochi ( Japanese : 下水 内 郡 , literally: "Lower Minochi District") is a district ( gun ) in the north of Nagano Prefecture on the Japanese main island of Honshū . It houses 1758 inhabitants on 271.66 km² and thus has a population density of only 6.5 inhabitants per km² (as of October 1, 2018). As of April 2005, the county has consisted of only one municipality, the village of Sakae (-mura).

After the great Meiji territorial reform in 1889, which introduced today's community forms, Shimominochi County consisted of the small town of Iiyama and 9 village communities. In 1954, during the Great Shōwa regional reform, the first incorporations took place, as a result of which by the end of 1956 the number of communities fell to two. In the period from 1955 to the present day, the area of ​​the district has been more than doubled through incorporation from neighboring districts (in 1955 it was 144 square kilometers).
