history

Kamiminochi-gun (literally "Upper Minochi-gun") was created on January 14, 1879 by splitting the old Minochi-gun into Kamiminochi-gun and Shimominochi-gun ("Lower Minochi-gun"). The seat of the then existing district administration was Nagano . Since April 1, 1889, Kamiminochi-gun belonged to a city and 33 villages. On April 1, 1897 Nagano became a city ( shi ) and thus spun off from Kamiminochi-gun. On April 1, 1914, the village of Yoshida became a city. The last territorial reform before World War II took place on July 1, 1923, when Yoshida was incorporated into Nagano along with three villages. From 1923 to 1954, a total of 29 villages belonged to Kamiminochi-gun.

As in all counties, the number of parishes in Kamiminochi-gun decreased significantly in the 1950s. In 1960 Kamiminochi-gun only belonged to three cities and seven villages. Further municipal mergers took place in 1966, 2005 and January 1, 2010.
