Suwa-gun (Nagano)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Suwa-gun ( Japanese : 諏 訪 郡 ), is a district ( gun ) in the center of Nagano Prefecture on the Japanese main island of Honshu . It houses 41,372 inhabitants on 254.89 km² and thus has a population density of 162.3 inhabitants per km² (as of October 1st, 2018). It has two small towns ( machi ) and a village ( mura ). These are Shimosuwa (19.626 Ew.) And Fujimi (14.091 Ew.) And the village of Hara (7655 Ew.). Shimosuwa has the highest population density.

The district of Suwa originated in the ancient provincial and district system as the district of Shinano Province ; in the 8th century there was at times a separate province of Suwa . In the Edo period, the Suwa district belonged to the Principality (-han) Suwa (also Takashima). For the restoration, the circle consisted of around 150 premodern machi and mura . When the prefectural system was introduced instead of the principalities in 1871, Suwa first became part of the Takashima prefecture (-ken) that had arisen from the principality, in the same year from Chikuma and from Nagano in 1876. In 1878 the district was set up in a modern form, the district administration was established in what was then Kami-Suwa-mura ("Village Upper Suwa"; 1941 to the new city of Suwa). In the 1920s, the district administration, district administrator, district committee and district council of Suwa were abolished as everywhere in the country.

After the major Meiji regional reform in 1889, which introduced today's community forms, the Suwa district consisted of 23 village communities. In 1950 there were two small towns and 18 villages. As early as 1955 (Great Shōwa Territorial Reform) the number of communities had dropped to five (the current three plus Osachi and Chino). Since August 1958 (the elevation of Chino to an independent city) the district consists of three municipalities. In the period from 1955 to today, the area of the district fell from about 527 to 255 square kilometers due to the incorporation into the cities of Chino , Okaya and Suwa .
