Nagiso ( Japanese : 南 木 曽 町 , -machi ) is a city in Kiso-gun in Nagano Prefecture on the Japanese main island of Honshu . Of all the county-level cities in Nagano Prefecture, it is the one with the smallest population. Nagiso is a member of the "Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Japan" ( Nihon de mottomo utsukushii mura rengō ).
geography
Nagiso is located at the southern end of the Kiso valley on the Kiso . 4,906 people live in an area of 215.96 km² (as of March 1, 2010). About 94% of the administrative city area consists of forested mountains. This urban area has a north-south extension of 15 km and a west-east extension of 20 km. Neighboring municipalities in Nagano prefecture are the urban district ( shi ) Iida and the villages ( mura ) Achi and Ōkuwa as well as the urban district Nakatsugawa in Gifu prefecture .
history
Due to its location on Nakasendō , post stations with accommodation for travelers were created in the Edo period in the area of today's Nagiso. Since the Meiji period, there were initially several independent small communities in the area. The city of Nagiso was finally founded on January 1, 1961 by merging the villages of Azuma and Tadachi.
traffic
The Chūō main line runs through Nagiso, the western line of which is operated by JR Central . Jūnikane, Nagiso and Tadachi train stations are located in Nagiso. In addition, national roads 19 and 256 run through the city.
Educational institutions
The city of Nagiso operates a primary and a middle school. There is also a high school that is funded by the prefecture.
Town twinning
An exchange agreement was concluded with Nagakute in Germany on October 21, 2006.
Sightseeing and tourism
There are several campsites and thermal baths ( onsen ) in Nagiso . In addition, Tsumago is one of the few remaining post offices from the Edo period in Nagiso.
