Yamagata ( Japanese : 山形 村 , -mura ) is a village in Higashichikuma-gun in Nagano Prefecture on the Japanese main island of Honshū .
geography
Yamagata has an area of 24.94 km² and 8,468 inhabitants (as of February 1, 2010). It is located in the southwest of the Matsumotal at the foot of the Hida Mountains . Neighboring communities are the city ( shi ) Matsumoto and the village of Asahi, which is also part of the Higashichikuma-gun .
Due to its proximity to the major cities of Matsumoto and Shiojiri , Yamagata has seen steady population growth in recent years and, with it, creeping urbanization. Commercial areas with large shopping centers have settled here in recent years. It is predicted that Yamagata will become a kind of " dormitory town " for Matsumoto and Shiojiri.

Educational institutions
Yamagata maintains a primary school and, together with the neighboring Asahi, a middle school.
