Shinano ( Japanese 信 濃 町 , - machi ) is a city in Kamiminochi County in Nagano Prefecture .

geography

Lake Nojiri is located within the city limits to the east . In the west is the 2,053 m high stratovolcano Kurohime ( 黒 姫 山 , -yama ) with the Kurohime plateau ( 黒 姫 高原 , Kurohime-kōgen ). The lake and the plateau belong together with the Myōkō plateau around the mountain Myōkō to the Jōshin'etsu-Kōgen National Park .

history

The name of the city comes from the province of Shinano , but the main town was not within today's Shinano.

Shinano was founded on April 1, 1955 as the village of Shinano ( 信 濃 村 , - mura ) as a merger of the villages of Kashiwabara ( 柏 原 村 , -mura ) and Fujisato ( 富士 里 村 , -mura ). On September 30, 1956, the villages of Shinano, Shinanojiri ( 信 濃 尻 村 , -mura ) and Furuma ( 古 間 村 , -mura ) merged to form the city of Shinano.

Shinano has a connection to the Jōshin'etsu highway to Fujioka and Jōshin as well as to the prefecture road 18 to Takasaki and Jōshin.

Shinano is connected to Kurohime and Furuma stations on the JR East Shin'etsu Main Line to Takasaki Station and Niigata Station .

Attractions

The Kurohime fairy tale house ( 黒 姫 童話 館 , Kurohime dōwakan ) collects fairy tales from all over the world.

education

In Shinano there are the primary schools Furumi ( 古 海 小学校 ), Nojiri Lake ( 野 尻 湖 小学校 ), Kashiwabara ( 柏 原 小学校 ), Furuma ( 古 間 小学校 ) and Fujisato ( 富士 里 Mittel ), as well as the Shinano middle school ( 信 濃 中 学校 ). In 2011 all schools are to be merged into a single integrated elementary and middle school.

Town twinning

Shinano's twin town has been Nagareyama in Chiba Prefecture, with around 160,000 inhabitants, since May 17, 1995 .
