List of train stations in Japan |
The Niigata Station ( Jap. 新潟駅 , Niigata-eki ) is located in the district of Chūō the Japanese city of Niigata in Niigata Prefecture .
The station, which opened on May 3, 1904, connects to the south-east of downtown Niigata and is located in the Bandai district, one of the oldest districts of Niigata. Niigata station is operated and served by three regional lines and one Shinkansen line by JR East . The station is used by an average of 37,322 passengers every day (as of 2012).
design type
The station has seven level tracks for regional and night train traffic, which are connected by bridges. While track 1 can be reached directly from the station building, tracks 2/3, 4/5 and 6/7 are located on an island.
The station building in its current appearance dates from the late 1950s.
In the course of the construction of the Jōetsu Shinkansen , which ends in Niigata, a Shinkansen stop with four tracks was built parallel to the southeast of the existing train station until 1982. This area - like almost the entire Shinkansen route - was raised so that it towers above the existing train station.
