The Shin'etsu Main Line ( Japanese 信 越 本 線 , Shin'etsu-honsen ) is a Japanese railway line operated by the East Japan Railway Company , which runs between Takasaki in Gunma Prefecture and Niigata in Niigata Prefecture . The name of the route is made up of the two old provincial names of the prefectures Nagano ( , Shinano ) and Niigata ( , Echigo ), which are connected by the railway line.

Sections

The Shin'etsu main line, which originally ran between Takasaki and Niigata, was interrupted by the completion of the Nagano Shinkansen in 1997 between Yokokawa and Shinonoi stations . One section of the route is now used for journeys in the Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park .

The JR East ceased operations between Karuizawa and Shinonoi due to parallel routing. This section of the route has since been operated as the Shinano Line by the private Shinano Tetsudō.

The section between Yokokawa and Karuizawa, which led over the Usui Pass , was closed with the opening of the Nagano Shinkansen. This section was legendary due to its gradient of 66.7 . Until 1963, this section of the route was designed as a rack railway , as the locomotives of the time were unable to cope with this gradient. The rack was only dismantled with the introduction of powerful electric locomotives of the JNR EF63 series.

Thus, the Shin'etsu main line is operationally divided into three parts today:

course length operator
Takasaki (高崎 駅) ↔ Yokokawa (横 川 駅) 29.7 km JR East
Yokokawa (横 川 駅) ↔ Karuizawa (軽 井 沢 駅) ( Usui Pass ) 11.2 km shut down
Karuizawa (軽 井 沢 駅) ↔ Shinonoi (篠 ノ 井 駅) 65.4 km Shinano Tetsudo
Shinonoi (篠 ノ 井 駅) ↔ Niigata (新潟 駅) 220.6 km JR East

In addition to passenger traffic, the Shin'etsu main line is an important freight railroad.
