East Japan Railway Company ( English for Japanese 東 日本 旅客 鉄 道 株式会社 , Higashi-Nihon ryokaku tetsudō Kabushiki kaisha , lit. " East Japanese passenger railway corporation") also often as JR Higashi-Nihon ( JR 東 日本 ), engl. JR East , abbreviated, listed on the Nikkei 225 , is one of the world's largest rail companies for passenger and one of seven successors of 1987 privatized Japanese National Railways (Engl. Japanese National Railways ).
The largest shareholder (as of March 31, 2015) is the Mizuho Financial Group with 4.99% of the shares.
history
The company was founded on April 1, 1987 after the Japanese State Railway Company was privatized and split up. Although this was actually a "privatization", the company was still completely state-owned for the following years and it was not until 2002 that the last shares were sold.
After the dissolution of the JNR, JR East took over the operation of the passenger traffic on the former JNR routes in the Tokyo area and the Tohoku region .
In 1991, JR East bought the Tohoku and Joetsu lines from JNR for a total (converted) of 37 billion Deutschmarks.
