history

After studying pharmacy, Thomas James Smith founded a small pharmacy in Kingston upon Hull in the county of Yorkshire in 1856 , in which, in addition to pharmaceutical products, dressing materials were offered, an important part of the company's product portfolio to this day. Since Smith never married and remained childless, his nephew Horatio Nelson Smith joined the company in 1896 and the company was renamed TJ Smith + Nephew . TJ Smith passed away that same year. From then on, Horatio Smith continued to run the company with his brother Thomas B. Smith under the name Smith & Nephew .

In 1914 the company had around 1,200 employees. During the First World War it supplied the armies of Great Britain, France, Belgium, Serbia, the USA and the Red Cross. Between 1920 and 1955 offices were established in Canada, New Zealand and the USA.

1958 Southhalls (Birmingham) and Artur Berton Ltd. acquired, Horatio Nelson Smith died in 1960. In 1962, Temple Place 2 in London became the headquarters of the management. In the following years branches were set up in Spain, Mexico, Thailand, Malaysia, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Finland, Sweden and Norway.

In 1986 the two US companies Dyonics in Andover near Boston and the Richards Medical Company in Memphis in the state of Tennessee were taken over. Richards was founded in 1934 by Don Richards to manufacture traumatological products such as plates, screws, nails and staples. In 1977 a production facility for orthopedic implants and instruments was established in Tuttlingen.

In 1998 the company was restructured to focus on the three core areas of wound care, endoscopy and orthopedics.

In 2012, several cases of corruption became known affecting locations in the US and Germany. Smith & Nephew had bribed doctors in Greece for years. The company was fined $ 22 million and was under supervision for 18 months.
