National Grid plc (until 2005 National Grid Transco plc ) is a listed British transmission system operator based in London .

National Grid owns the transmission grids in England and operates electricity and gas networks in the United Kingdom , the United States and Australia . National Grid USA , listed in the S&P 500, is a subsidiary. National Grid operates predominantly in Great Britain.

National Grid was created in 1990 from the splitting up of the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB). National Grid's shares were distributed to the 12 regional utilities in England . On December 11, 1995, the shares were first traded on the London Stock Exchange . The 12 original shareholders sold most of their shares on the stock exchange within a year.

In the 2000s, the company entered the US market through the takeover of several energy suppliers in the northeastern US (e.g. Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation ).
