Kingfisher plc is a UK retail group with an international focus that has historically owned a large number of retail companies and is currently specialized in home improvement stores . The company is listed on the Exchange London Stock exchange-listed and 100 FTSE listed.
history
The company was founded in 1982 when Paternoster Sores Ltd sold out the UK Woolworth chain, which later changed its name to Woolworth Holdings plc. The logo of the group is the Eisvogel (English Kingfisher).
Continuous acquisitions of retail companies such as B&Q , Superdrug , Comet and MVC allowed the group to expand. In 1994 it was renamed Kingfisher plc. Further acquisitions of European companies such as Castorama , BUT and the traditional Berlin company Foto-Radio Wegert / ProMarkt led to the rise of the company to the top of the retail business in the United Kingdom. In 1999, the takeover of the British rival retail chain Asda failed because the American competitor Wal-Mart won the bidding competition. From 1998 to 2003, the Kingfisher Group also owned the German electronics retail chain ProMarkt , as well as the Internet portals Yagma.com and Heimwerken.de. In the following years, Kingfisher concentrated on the acquisition of hardware stores.
The group was led by Sir Geoffrey Mulcahy between 1984 and 2002 . Because of his interest in sailing, the company became the main sponsor of British sailor Ellen MacArthur .
On September 30, 2013 it was announced that Kingfisher intends to expand to Germany with its hardware store brand "ScrewFix".
