Castorama Market in Szczecin , Poland

Castorama is the name of a native to France coming home improvement retailer based in Templemars , Nord . It is currently (as of 2016) present in France, Poland and Russia . This chain is now a subsidiary of the British retail group Kingfisher .

history

Christian Dubois founded the Castorama company on June 13, 1969. On the same day, the first market was opened in Englos near the city of Lille . It was not until 1971 that the name was entered in the commercial register as an official brand name . In 1988 the company began to expand internationally; first in Italy, then later in Germany, Poland and Russia. The British DIY chain B&Q , a subsidiary of the British retail group Kingfisher , took over 57.9% of the shares in 1998, so that Kingfisher has had control of the company ever since. The takeover was completed in 2002, when finally 100% of the shares had changed hands. At the same time, Christian Dubois, who had meanwhile moved to the supervisory board, left the company entirely.

The founder

Christian Dubois was born in November 1921. In the 1950s, he started a few trading companies in the construction and above all do-it-yourself - industry . Finally, on June 13, 1969, he founded "Castorama" in Englos and registered the company name as a brand name three years later . He led the company to become the market leader in France in the mid-1980s. At the age of 71, in 1992, he moved from the company's executive committee to the supervisory board. Ten years later, in 2002, he left the company completely, at the same time as Kingfisher took over 100% of the company. He died on January 20, 2005 at the age of 83.

Castorama in Germany

Castorama was founded in Germany in 1990 and the first store was opened in 1992. In April 2002 the name Castorama was changed to Casto Depot in Germany. All six hardware stores were completely rebuilt. The aim was to make the company more profitable with as few resources as possible, but it did not succeed. On July 31, 2003, all Casto Depot stores in Germany came to an end. The locations in Castrop-Rauxel , Kamen , Wildau near Berlin , Koblenz , Chemnitz and Kassel were affected . The owner Kingfisher decided in December 2002 that Casto Depot would withdraw from the German area. A social plan was drawn up and all employees were dismissed. This affected around 350 employees at the six DIY stores and around 40 employees at the headquarters in Liederbach am Taunus .
