Location of the association of municipalities in the Hauts-de-France region

The Métropole Européenne de Lille is a French association of municipalities with the legal form of a Métropole in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It was founded on December 31, 1966 and comprises 90 parishes. The area is located in the metropolitan area around the city of Lille , where the administrative headquarters are also located. As a Eurométropole , it is also responsible for cross-border networks with Belgium in the Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai Eurodistrict .

Historical development

The community association was originally founded with the legal form of a Communauté urbaine under the name Lille Métropole Communauté urbaine . With effect from January 1, 2015, it was raised to the legal form of a metropolis and changed its name to the current name.

With effect from January 1, 2017, the association was expanded to include five municipalities from the dissolved Communauté de communes de Weppes .
