La Madeleine ( Dutch : Berkem ) is a French municipality with 21,173 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement of Lille and the canton of Lille-1 .

The municipality is located in the metropolitan area north of Lille . Neighboring municipalities are Marquette-lez-Lille in the north, Marcq-en-Barœul in the east, Lille in the south and Saint-André-lez-Lille in the north-west.

Sainte-Marie-Madeleine

The relatively small town is lodging many buildings from the style of the Art Deco and Art Nouveau ( Art Nouveau ). A particularly large number of buildings of this type are located on Avenue de la République and the streets adjacent to it to the west: Avenue Saint-Maur , Rue Faidherbe , Rue Jean Bart , Rue Berthelot , Rue du Docteur Legay and Rue de Paris .

Other sights include the town hall and the adjoining church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine . The main building of the Résidence Saint Maur nursing home is also impressive .
