geography

Cysoing is located at an average altitude of 38 meters above sea level on the border between the French part of the former county of Flanders (Pays Pévèle) and the Métropole Européenne de Lille , 16 kilometers southeast of Lille and 18 kilometers west of the Belgian city of Tournai . The Riez de Bourghelles, a tributary of the Marque, flows south of the town center through the municipality, which has an area of 13.62 square kilometers.

history

Margrave Eberhard of Friuli (French Évrard de Frioul ; 810–866) and his wife Gisela (French Gisèle ; 819 / 822–874) founded the Abbey of Saint-Calixte de Cysoing in the 9th century . The couple were very interested in relics and had relics of the Catholic Saint Calixt I from Brescia brought to Cysoing in 854 . The relics were connected to Eberhard, increased his reputation and created a bridge between Eberhard's property in northern Italy and the Tournaisis , the Pagus Tornacensis of the county of Flanders. The abbey also had relics of Remigius of Reims (437-533) which created a certain political proximity to Reims . Eberhard and Gisela were buried in the abbey. Eberhard decreed in his will that his son Adalard should become Abbot of Cysoing. After his death, his brother Raoul became abbot, who bequeathed the abbey to the Archdiocese of Reims . After Raoul's death there was a dispute over the abbey and the relics. Raoul's brother-in-law, Hucbald de Gouy, Count of Ostervant , claimed the abbey and relics for himself. Archbishop Fulko the Venerable († 900) had the relics brought to Reims.

Eberhard was venerated as a saint in Cysoing after his death and at least until the 12th century. His feast day is December 16. His bones were brought to Hasnon Abbey as relics in 1070 .

The Fontenoy pyramid

The so-called Pyramid de Fontenoy was built at the abbey in the 18th century , which is based on the stay of Louis XV. (1710–1774) in the abbey in 1744 and the battle of Fontenoy in 1745. The monument is officially classified as Monument historique .

Culture

In Cysoing, as in Flemish Belgium, it is the custom to organize parades with " giants ". There are 15 such traditional giant figures throughout the Pays de Pévèle municipality . There are 450 of these giants in total in northern France. The giants act as mascots and represent the mirror image of a community. In Cysoing there are four giants, Bacchus , Mouquil 'and the couple Hellin II and Pétronille. Bacchus rides a barrel. Mouquil 'was made in 2002, it is over three meters high, dressed like an infant and represents the new century. He is accompanied by members of the carnival club who are also disguised as babies. Hellin II and Pétronille are inspired by the story of Cysoing. Hellin II. Is the "red knight" and was created in 1990. He "married" Pétronille in 1993.
