Eberhard of Friuli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eberhard (* 810 ; † December 16, 866 in Italy ) from the Unruochingen family was Margrave of Friuli from 828 until his death . Emperor Ludwig the Pious appointed him the successor of Margrave Balderich of Friuli , who was deposed at the imperial assembly in Aachen in February 828, who was accused of failure to ward off the devastating incursion of Omurtag and his Bulgarians in Pannonia in the summer of 827. However, Balderich's large mark was divided into four counties at the same time: Friuli with Istria , Carantania, Carniola with Liburnia (Franconian Croatia), and Savia.

Eberhard was a son of Unruoch II , Count of Ternois . He married around 836 Gisela (* end of 819/822; † after July 1, 874), daughter of Ludwig the Pious from his second marriage to the Welfin Judith . Eberhard was highly educated and was friends with Hrabanus Maurus , Hinkmar von Reims and Hartgar von Liège . He founded the Cysoing Abbey near Lille , where he and his wife were also buried.
