Hartgar of Liege

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hartgar von Liège (also Hirchar or Hircar ; † September 29, 855 in Liège ) was from 841 to 855 as Pirard's successor, the 37th Bishop of Liège .

Hartgar came from the Franconian nobility and was a friend and advisor to the king and later emperor Lothar I , in whose middle kingdom his bishopric had fallen with the partition of the Franconian empire agreed in the Treaty of Verdun in August 843 and on whose behalf he later met Pope Leo IV . led in Rome negotiations.

He had the first bishop's palace built in Liège , and he was a great patron of the Liège cathedral school . Around 848 he took the Irish pilgrim and scholar Sedulius Scotus (around 820-880) in Liège and made him head of the cathedral school. This attracted other Irish pilgrims and made the school flourish.

Hartgar died on September 29, 855.
