Marie-Dominique Philippe (born September 8, 1912 in Cysoing near Lille , Département Nord , † August 26, 2006 in St. Jodard , Département Loire ) was a French Dominican , philosopher , theologian and founder of the Community of St. John ( French " Communauté Saint Jean ”).

Life

He was born the eighth of twelve children. At the suggestion of his uncle Thomas Dehau, he entered the Dominican order in 1930. He studied philosophy and theology at the religious college Le Saulchoir in the Belgian city of Cain near Tournai and was ordained a priest on July 14, 1936 . From 1937 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1962 he was professor of philosophy and dogmatics in Le Saulchoir (since 1939 at its new location in Étiolles near Paris), from 1945 to 1982 professor of ancient philosophy and metaphysics in Friborg , Switzerland . In 1963 he invited Marthe Robin one, retreats and days of recollection in that she founded " Foyer de Charité to keep." For 18 years he led the priests' retreat in Châteauneuf-de-Galaure ( Drôme department in France).

In 1975 five students in Freiburg wanted to live together in a religious community and asked him for spiritual instruction. Encouraged by Marthe Robin, this resulted in the “Communauté Saint Jean” (German “Community of St. John” or “Johannesgemeinschaft”). Father Philippe never joined the community and remained professor in Freiburg until 1982. He then taught philosophy and theology in the community's training houses in Rimont and St. Jodard. From 1986 to 2001 he was Prior General of the Johannesgemeinschaft, after which he was succeeded by Father Jean-Pierre-Marie Guérin-Boutard in this office.

Since a stroke on July 20, 2006, Father Philippe was partially paralyzed and could no longer speak.

Allegations of abuse

Following a general chapter of the Fellowship of Saint John in April 2013, the Prior General, Fr. Thomas Joachim, announced in a letter to the brothers that, according to consistent testimonies to “women whom he was spiritually accompanying, Fr. Philippe had committed acts which corresponded to the vows contradict chastity ”. These allegations were confirmed as correct on December 20, 2016 by the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life .

The 2019 documentary published by the Arte France television channel on God's abused servants took up these allegations and accused Philippe of the continued sexual abuse of women religious. It showed testimony from two of his victims and recordings of a mass in which bishops apologized to the victims on behalf of the Church.

François-Xavier, Superior General of the Community of St. John, spoke at a first General Chapter in 2019 that “the abnormal sides of our Founder must be confessed very clearly”. At the second general chapter in 2019, the brothers of St. John decided to “re-establish the community” and “clearly distanced themselves from its founder”.
