The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) is the local examination syndicate of the University of Cambridge in England . It is responsible for a large number of exams that are valid throughout the UK and some internationally. These include, for example, the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) exams and the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) .

UCLES was founded in 1858 . In 1873 the universities of Oxford and Cambridge created the Joint Board of Oxford and Cambridge Schools Examination Board, which is now one of the top three examination boards in England as the OCR Examination Board (OCR = Oxford, Cambridge, RSA ). Other examination commissions under the umbrella of UCLES are the Southern Universities Joint Board and the Midland Examining Group .
