The municipality is located on the canalised Deûle , also known as Canal de la Deûle . Here the Canal d'Aire branches off to the west, which forms the major shipping route Dunkirk-Scheldt as part of a chain of canals that have been expanded for ships with a loading capacity of up to 3,000 tons .
