Mons-en-Barœul (literally Berg am Barœul ) is a French municipality with 20,782 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . The municipality is located in the canton of Lille-3 .

geography

The municipality is located about 3.5 kilometers east-northeast of Lille in the lowlands of French Flanders in the middle of the metropolis Métropole Européenne de Lille, which is surrounded by the cities of Lille, Roubaix and Tourcoing . Part of the community is forested by the Forêt du Barœul .

history

Fort de Mons

The small community experienced its boom as a banlieue of Lille. Fort de Mons was built between 1878 and 1880 to protect the city of Lille against a possible invasion from the east. Today there is a station of the Lille metro here . As a modern structure, the Mons radio tower towers over the city.
