history
During the construction of the Lille - Dunkirk railway line in the 19th century, a stone ax and pottery fragments were discovered in the Saint-André area. These traces of the past confirm the settlement of Gauls in today's urban area.
The waters of the lower reaches of the Deûle and other rivers in the region attracted the Gauls because they enabled them to fish and hunt .
Later, while the region was part of the Franconian Empire , the first inhabitants of the area organized themselves into small communities for the purpose of clearing and reclaiming the land.
Gradually the area was populated , bridges were built over the rivers, and a first castle was built on an island (old French: "L'Isle") of the Deûle, which later became "Lille", also linguistically. The wealth of the country, combined with the hard work of the locals, led to the development of a trading center that never ceased to prosper .
coat of arms
The coat of arms of Saint-André is divided across. Above on a red background in gold the gate of the Abbey of Marquette ( neighboring town ) and below on a blue background three ermine coats, each refined by a vertically arranged sword, in the original the blazon reads : “Coupé, en chef: de gueules à la porte de l'abbaye de Marquette d'or, et en pointe: d'azur aux trois manteaux d'hermine soutenus chacun par une épée en pal rangées en fasce.
