La Chapelle-d'Armentières ( Dutch armentières Chapel ) is a French municipality with 8590 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the municipal association Métropole Européenne de Lille .
geography
La Chapelle-d'Armentières is a neighboring town of Armentières . It is located on Autobahn 25 near the Belgian border in the Pays de Weppes in Flandre Gallicante (Gallic Flanders), 15 kilometers north of Lille and 60 kilometers south of Dunkirk . The hamlets of La Choque and Wez-Macquart belong to the municipality.
history
Until the French Revolution (1789-1799) La Chapelle-d'Armentières belonged to Armentières. Then the place was separated in 1790 under the name Armentières-Paroisse and reintegrated in 1794, before it was finally replaced by Armentières in 1820 under its current name. In 1854 the district of Bois-Grenier became an independent municipality.
In the First World War (1914-1918) La Chapelle-d'Armentières was trench warfare destroyed. It took until the 1960s for the population to recover.
