Birchington-on-Sea is a First mentioned in 1240 village in the northeast of the county Kent in England . It belongs to the Thanet district , has about 9800 inhabitants (as of 2001) and is located on the North Sea in the coastal section between the cities of Herne Bay and Westgate-on-Sea east of the Thames estuary on the Isle of Thanet .
Birchington-on-Sea describes itself as "the largest village in Kent", which is an unofficial title due to the lack of a uniform definition of a village in the UK.
As a seaside resort located on four sandy bays, the place is very popular with tourists and as a retirement home for retirees.
On the outskirts of the village is Quex Park , where not only a mansion but also a bell tower (The Waterloo Tower) was built in 1818 for the purpose of changing bells .
The poet and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti died in 1882 while on vacation in Birchington-on-Sea, where he was also buried.
