Wervicq-Sud ( Flemish : Zuid-Wervik ) is a commune with 5413 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the arrondissement of Lille and is part of the canton of Lambersart . The inhabitants are called Wervicquois .
geography
Wervicq-Sud is located about 15 kilometers north of Lille an der Leie (French: Lys ) directly on the Franco- Belgian border. Wervik-Sud is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Wervik (Belgium) in the north, Bousbecque in the east, Linselles in the south and Comines in the west.
The former National Route 345 runs through the municipality .
history
As a Gallo-Roman settlement Viroviacum , the origins of the community go back a long way. The place is also listed as Virovino on the Tabula Peutingeriana . The place was destroyed several times. Until the Treaty of Madrid in 1527, the place belonged to the county of Flanders. Then he was placed under the Spanish Crown. Finally, the area was conquered under Louis XIV in 1667. In 1713 the place was divided by the Peace of Utrecht. The northern part went to Flanders, the southern part remained French.

Community partnerships
A partnership with the German municipality of Roetgen in North Rhine-Westphalia has existed since 1974 . An intensive partnership is also maintained with the Wervik municipality of the same name on the other side of the Leie.
