Erquinghem-Lys (formerly also Erquinghem-sur-la-Lys ,, ndl .: "Erkengem aan de Leie"); German literally about: Erkenheim on the Lys is a French commune in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . The municipality has 5,158 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), is part of the arrondissement of Lille and the canton of Armentières .
geography
The community is located on the Leie ( French Lys ), which is also what the place name refers to. The municipality of Erquinghem-Lys extends over an area of 8.94 km² (= 894 ha ). The neighboring communities are Nieppe in the north, Armentières in the northeast, La Chapelle-d'Armentières in the east, Bois-Grenier in the southeast, Fleurbaix in the south, Sailly-sur-la-Lys in the southwest and Steenwerck in the west.
Etymology and history
Erquinghem was first mentioned in writing in 1116 as "Herchengehem".
During the First World War , the British - German front was very close by, and the associated fighting caused great devastation in and around Erquinghem.
