history

On June 22, 1190, Wannehain was first documented in a bull from Pope Clement III. mentioned. The name is the phonetic rendering of the Flemish place name Wennehem . Wannehain belonged to the Doornik cathedral chapter . This ownership was confirmed in a Brussels document on April 21, 1770. A noble family named Wannehain first appeared as secular lords in the 12th century . In 1465 the rule of Wannehain went to Gilles de la Cessoie . When the daughters married into the Landas family , the manor in Wannehain became the property of this family. Wannehain came to the Ennetières family on October 18, 1638 at the wedding of Catherine Louise Landas and Charles Philippe Ennetières . Finally, in 1712, the Wannehain estate became the property of the long-established Counts of Lalaing , who kept them until the French Revolution . At the end of the 19th century, the descendants of the Counts of Lalaing owned 115 hectares of land, forests, meadows, ponds and many houses.

Culture and sights

Buildings

Church of St. Cecilia
  • The manor house ( La Grande Ferme ), which is typical of the Pévèle landscape, is part of a large farm ensemble in the south-east of the town center. The house, now inhabited by private individuals, is flanked by a round brick tower. The outbuildings include barns, stables and a dovecote. The vaulted cellar with a blue stone floor is considered to be the oldest part. An extension of the main building, a building of more recent construction, is on the outer corridor from 1748. Another adjacent building was once used as a stable. Most of the buildings that still exist today date from the 17th and 18th centuries, the main building with the hall and the corner tower are dated to 1630.
  • The Church of St. Cäcilia ( Église Sainte-Cécile ) dates from between the 12th and 13th centuries. The nave is flanked by a side chapel in the north. A large choir was added in the 16th century. By the mid-nineteenth century, it was considered both too small and irregular in its plan and volume. A complete reconstruction in neo-Gothic style took place in the 19th century, whereby the brick tower from the classical period (17th / 18th century) was retained.

Folklore and carnival

The Géants de Zuytpeenee (German: Giganten von Zuytpeene ) belong to the traditional giant figures ( Géants du Nord ) that are widespread at festivals in northern France and neighboring Belgium . Since 2005, the performances have been carried out by UNESCO under the title Processions of Giants and Dragons from Belgium and France as masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity . The characters from Wannehain are called Gérard de Wannehain and Gillette Bricquemez . The figure of Thomas goes back to Auguste Thomas Joseph Liot de Nortbecourt , who was the king's musketeer until the French Revolution.

Economy and Infrastructure

There are three farms in the municipality (cereal and tobacco growing, dairy farming).

Wannehain is somewhat away from the national traffic flows, but is connected in all directions with the surrounding cities and communities by a well-developed road network. A road border crossing leads to Esplechin, Belgium . The TGV train line runs north of Wannehain from Lille or Paris to Brussels (with boarding in nearby Lille).
